Summer Opportunities for Medical Students
The School of Medicine funds and/or coordinates a number of opportunities for University of Mississippi Medical Students during the summer following the first year. A wide range of clinical and research experinences are available on a recurring basis. Additional opportunities for summer employement exist on a periodic basis based on funding, mentor, and project availability. It's typical for as many as fifty rising second year students to particpate in one of the following programs. All students receive a modest stipend for participation.
Dean's Clinical Observership. The Dean's Office will hire approximately 25 students to work and observe in clinical areas. The program lasts eight weeks but does offer some flexibilty to students who have additional summer commitments. Clinical areas participating include: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesia, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, and Family Medicine. The typical student will work in one area for four weeks and then rotate to a second. A simple email (jclark@union.umsmed.edu) gets you on the list and is your resource for questions. An orientation meeting will occur in late March.
